Sure, we’re an online grocery store, but we’re also a team that’s obsessed with flavor, snacking, and finding better ways to get great food to more people.
“I didn’t set out to start a grocery company—I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was visiting an orchard when I noticed a ton of perfectly good apples getting tossed aside because they were too small, too big, or a little funny looking. Then I started digging into how much food goes to waste every year—not just on farms, but across the entire supply chain—and what I found was infuriating. Billions of pounds of high-quality food thrown away, mostly because traditional grocery stores only want perfect-looking food.
After I learned just how wasteful our food system is, I started rescuing, packing, and delivering that “ugly” produce around Philly myself. Today, Misfits Market has grown into a full-service grocery store that’s steered by that same mission: to eliminate food waste and build a more sustainable food system.”
–Abhi Ramesh, Founder and CEO
By building real relationships with our farmers and producers, we get to know their practices inside and out—and work together to tackle food waste at the source.
We’ve been proud to offer Lakeside’s standout California-grown organic veggies since 2018, but our partnership goes even deeper. When they told us trimmed broccoli florets were going to waste during routine fieldwork, we collaborated to package them up as Sweet Broccoli Tops. That kind of teamwork is an easy (and delicious way!) to save food waste, while offering customers big savings.
Morgan Drummond, Private Label
As a certified Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savante, Morgan knows a thing or two about flavor. She’s played an integral role in developing our Odds & Ends line, prioritizing high-quality, sustainable food at a great value.
John Jennings, Meat & Seafood
John went to culinary school and has worked for some of the biggest names in meat (Blue Hill at Stone Barns, for one), so he knows a good deal on quality steakhouse cuts when he sees one.
Riley Davies, Produce
Responsible for many of our rescued produce buys, Riley has a soft spot for food that looks funny but tastes great. And with a degree in agriculture, she knows just how important supporting farmers and fighting food waste is.
We ran the numbers—when we save food from waste, we also save all the resources that went into producing it. In the last year alone we saved...
That’s enough energy to power 1,004 homes for a year!
That’s enough water to fill 1,421 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
For a total of 238 million pounds since 2018!
A more sustainable food system means access to nutritious food for everyone. But right now, 1 in 7 people face hunger*—while a third of all U.S. food goes to waste**. That’s why we partner with 60+ organizations nationwide, including Feeding America, to fight hunger and improve food access everywhere we operate. Learn more here.
